U.S. Congresswoman Corrine Brown of Florida recently invited DBE firms to a Capacity Building Forum and Small Business Roundtable Discussion in partnership with the Jacksonville Transportation Authority (JTA) and the U. S. Department of Transportation’s Office of Small and Disadvantaged Business Utilization (OSDBU). The event will focus on effective strategies to increase the number of minority-owned firms working on local, state, and federal contracts. The meeting takes place Friday June 27, 2014 from 9:00 a.m. – 11:30 a.m. at the Florida Department of Transportation Training Center located at 2198 Edison Avenue in Jacksonville, FL.
The forum was prompted by the start of Florida’s $2.1 billion Interstate 4 (I-4) Corridor Ultimate Project. A press release on the website of Congresswoman Brown says, “The project presents an opportunity for economic empowerment for a large number of small businesses and will serve as a focal point of discussion along with topics such as best practices for contracting success, contracting and subcontracting qualifications, and anticipated procurements. Representatives from JTA and other local agencies will also provide information and answer questions concerning their Small and Disadvantaged Business Programs, and local contracting opportunities.”
The I-4 Ultimate Project is over 21 miles from west of Kirkman Road to east of SR 434 in Orlando. The project reconstructs 15 major interchanges, replaces more than 75 bridges, adds four (4) variable priced tolled Express Lanes in the median and completely rebuilds general use lanes along entire corridor. Construction on the project is scheduled to begin in early 2015 and the estimated completion date is early 2021.
Several speakers are scheduled to participate in the event including Congresswoman Brown; Nathaniel Ford, CEO of the Jacksonville Transportation Authority; Paul Martinez, Director of Intra Governmental Affairs, Office of Mayor Alvin Brown; Adrianna Clark, Southeast Regional Director, OSDBU; Greg Evans, District 2 Secretary, Florida Department of Transportation; and representatives from I-4 Mobility Partners construction team. Construction team members include Skanska USA Civil, Granite Construction, and Lane Construction Corporation.
